Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes produced a sensational performance to help the team to a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK in their Champions League opener.

Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock for United inside 27 minutes when he supplied a delicate finish to Patrick Dorgu’s delivery.

Fernandes doubled United’s advantage 15 minutes later, rounding off a brilliant team move, with Youri Tielemans registering the first assist of his Old Trafford career. Benjamin Sesko then rounded off the goalkeeper to make it 3-0 just before the break.

Lisandro Martínez pounced on a scramble inside the box to add a fourth in the second half, removing any lingering uncertainty about the outcome.

In yet another game, Fernandes was decisive for United and contributed a lot more than his goal.

The Portugal international managed an impressive 89% pass accuracy and touched the ball 70 times. Eight of his passes were delivered into the final ball.

Fernandes was influential at both ends, fashioning four chances while also contributing four ball recoveries.

He fired three shots, two of which were on target.

The United skipper also whipped in two crosses for his teammates, while chipping in with two defensive contributions of his own.

Fernandes is now up to four goals for the season, having netted a brace in the 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.

United will be eager for him to make his mark again this weekend when he and his teammates welcome cross-town rivals Manchester City to the Theatre of Dreams.

Morale within the camp will be buoyed by the comfortable victory over Sabah. Of equal satisfaction to Carrick will be the fact that he was able to rotate his squad, resting key personnel whilst providing valuable game time to others.
