Everton and Liverpool headline the Hill Dickinson Stadium era on Sunday afternoon as the new ground hosts its first Premier League Merseyside derby. The Toffees come back to their new base after a breathless 2-2 draw at Brentford last weekend, while the Reds arrive still smarting from a meek Champions League exit in midweek.

Evertonians will never forget the last derby at Goodison Park, remembered as much for James Tarkowski’s vicious volley as for Arne Slot’s heated post-match reaction — leaving Sunday’s Hill Dickinson unveiling with a high bar to clear.

Slot’s side did halt a three-game winless league run with a 2-0 victory over Fulham last weekend, with teenager Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah on target, but Tuesday’s European disappointment quickly punctured any optimism. Liverpool were not outclassed in every moment by Paris Saint-Germain, yet Ousmane Dembele’s clinical second-half double sealed a 4-0 aggregate quarter-final defeat and ended the Reds’ Champions League run.

With four defeats in their last five matches in all competitions, the mood is low. Even so, Liverpool remain well placed for a top-five finish, holding a four-point advantage over fifth-placed Chelsea.

Everton are close to full strength for the derby, missing only Jack Grealish (foot) after Carlos Alcaraz returned. David Moyes is expected to stick with his established XI, with in-form Beto keeping Thierno Barry out.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been hit hard by Hugo Ekitike’s Achilles rupture, adding to absences for Alisson Becker, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez. Alexander Isak should deputise up front, but with his minutes being managed after a leg fracture, Cody Gakpo or Mohamed Salah could fill in at nine later on.
