How Ibrahima Konate’s new contract could shape Liverpool’s summer transfer plans
Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate has confirmed that he is close to signing a deal , ending speculations about his future.
Konate’s current deal ends this summer, leading to reports that he could leave as a free agent.
He was linked with Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants informed Liverpool that they were not going to pursue a deal for him.
With Konate’s new contract, Liverpool are unlikely to sign a new centre-back this summer as they now have enough depth in that position.
Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez will be Liverpool’s options central defensive options next season.
Konate’s new contract could free up funds, allowing Liverpool to address other weaknesses in their squad.
A difficult season coupled with Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson’s imminent exits, have further increased the need for reinforcements.
Liverpool have already identified RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande as their primary target to replace Salah , but they need one more forward to provide adequate depth in attack.
They did not replace Luis Diaz last summer and Federico Chiesa is expected to leave, leaving them short of options in wide attacking positions.
Liverpool also plan to sign a new midfielder with uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones’ futures. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is one of their targets.
In addition, they are reportedly looking to sign a new left-back to compete with Milos Kerkez. Kostas Tsimikas could leave on a permanent deal, further increasing the need to bring in another left-back.
Liverpool are expected to be active in this summer’s transfer window and keeping Konate could allow them focus on strengthening other key areas.
