Brad Friedel has insisted Liverpool cannot simply find a single replacement for Mohamed Salah this summer. The Egyptian recently confirmed his plans to leave Anfield at the end of the season, despite signing a contract extension last year that was set to keep him at the club until 2027.
Taking to social media to break the news, Salah explained in a video: "Hello everyone. Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club.
"We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present.
"And to the fans, I don't have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest time. It's something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.
"Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."
A cornerstone of the club since joining in 2017, Salah has racked up 255 goals and 122 assists from 435 appearances across all competitions to date. He was also pivotal in the club's Premier League title triumph last season, contributing 29 goals and 18 assists.
As a result, the Reds face a monumental challenge when it comes to finding a successor for the 33-year-old this summer. However, former Liverpool goalkeeper Friedel believes that Arne Slot and the board cannot simply look to replace him on a straight one-for-one basis.

Speaking via Gambling.com, the experts in UK Online Casinos , the 54-year-old said: "Go replace Thierry Henry at Arsenal . It doesn't recreate itself like that. But could you go and change the midfield a little bit and say, go get an [Adam] Wharton and then go maybe try to get an [Ousmane] Dembele or something like that.
"I don't know if Dembele would come, but something like that, where you're tweaking the system a little bit and type of player in certain positions. To replace the goal ratio and assist ratio that someone like Salah would have...I think you have to look two ways. I think you have to look at conceding less and then scoring probably a little bit less than Salah did.
"But if you're conceding less, then you can have that same type of ratio. I think that would be something that Liverpool would be looking to do. I think it would be very difficult to say, Salah's gone, so let's go get the one person that's going to go score us 34 goals a season. That's not easily done as a winger, by the way, not as a nine.
"I think they'll collectively be trying to bring in two or three, change the system a little bit. [Alexander] Isak hopefully will have a much different season and obviously unfortunate with injury. And [Florian] Wirtz will have - who I think is an excellent player, but needed a little bit of time for the Premier League - he'll have that now. I think we'll see a very good Wirtz next season as well."
