Manchester United Look to Lure Spurs Star

As Tottenham Hotspur stare into the abyss of relegation, opportunistic vultures circle around the beleaguered London club hopeful to pick up some players. Our sources have confirmed that earlier today, Manchester United made formal inquiries into Pedro Porro . The Spanish right back is in prime form at 26 years-old, and apparently eager to pursue new opportunities.

Porro progressed from his early days in Don Benito through the academies of Rayo Vallecano and Girona, before a $15M move to Manchester City back in 2019. With limited playing chances, he was loaned back to Rayo Vallecano and then Sporting Lisbon in the following year. Under Ruben Amorim, Porro came into his own, winning two Team of the Year nods and making the move permanent in 2022. He eventually played 98 matches for the Portuguese side and recorded 12 goals and 20 assists.

Then the Spurs came knocking.

In January 2023, Porro started a half-season loan with an obligation to buy. Despite a poor start (Spurs chief Tim Sherwood called him “so bad it’s unbelievable”), Porro ultimately became an integral part of the squad and transferred for $53M. His prodigious workrate, powerful overlapping runs and precision passing have been hallmarks of his Spurs career to date. He’s durable as well, with only two reported injuries in his nearly three years. He’s logged 147 games with 26 assists and 13 goals – none bigger than his strike against Bodø/Glimt to propel Spurs into the 2022/25 Europa League final.

How ironic, then, that Manchester United (who lost that match to Spurs) would now come courting. The Reds have reportedly led with a $53M offer and a contract through 2028. Spurs have not yet commented on the inquiry.

Although Porro’s form and effort have not wavered, he’s apparently had enough with the Spurs . In March, he lambasted the club in a post-match interview calling the recent managerial upheaval and team performances a “disaster.” In their 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace he argued with the fourth official and punched a bench in frustration, though later explained he was upset at his own performance.

Although Manchester United are not devoid of drama, they’re sitting in third place with five games to play, and qualification for Champions League looks likely. A player of his caliber, grit and energy would be a welcome addition.
