Mikel Arteta makes Arsenal title promise after finally breaking silence on historic triumph

Mikel Arteta has spoken for the first time since the title parade in June earlier this year. Arsenal were crowned champions of the Premier League, beating Manchester City by seven points and ending a 22-year wait for the crown.

Attention, however, has already turned to the new season, with plenty of intrigue about how the new year will play out. Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all have new coaches, while Michael Carrick at Manchester United and Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur are still not long in their roles.

Mikel Arteta is the only manager in the league with a Premier League winners’ medal following the victory and Pep Guardiola’s resignation as Manchester City manager. He is also the longest-serving coach, and Arsenal are seen as the most stable side and favourites for another title.

Speaking to the Arsenal App, Arteta recalled the last time we saw him publicly with the squad, at the title parade. It was clear the pride the Spaniard has for what he and his players achieved and the impact it had on the fan base.

“Probably the best football experience that I’ve had,” he said. “It puts it probably at the highest level, higher than any other trophy that I've won or moment that I've had.

“Because it tells a story and it tells the evolution of a club that was in a difficult position at many levels and was lacking a connection between the club, the supporters, the purpose, the identity and what we actually wanted to achieve.”

But, as mentioned, attention has already turned to the new season. Having won it, where do Arsenal now turn, to find that same feeling, and questions will be whether this was a culmination of work, or the start of something bigger.

Listening to what Arteta has to say, it is obvious which one of the two he sides with. “This has to be the start and this has to be the standard,” he said.

“Excellence has to be our standard and this has to drive to attack the future. The way we behave daily with more and more determination and ambition because we've shown that we've got it.

“Now we have to show that we belong to this level and we want to increase and take this football club to a different dimension.”

He added: “My ambition is that daily we nail the standards and the requirements on the day to be better the following day. That is the thing that we have to control.

“And maintaining that ambition, that discipline, that commitment and that positive energy through 11 months. That is the responsibility that we all have. If we all achieve that, we are going to be in a really strong position in May.”
