QPR can't afford to let Ronnie Edwards sign for Burnley if they're to compete for promotion to the Premier League

QPR have finished 15th in the Championship in the last two seasons and will be looking to improve on that in 2026/27.

Julien Stéphan led the team to more points in 2025/26 than the Hoops earned in the prior campaign, but they were still unable to crack into the top half of the table, and the play-off picture.

The Frenchman will want to improve the club’s standing over the next 12 months, and the play-offs' expansion to include two more teams offers a fresh opportunity to fight for promotion.

The London outfit haven’t been in the top flight since 2015, but their ambition will be to get back into the Premier League sooner rather than later.

Promotion offers a prize of up to £200 million, making it extremely valuable for any club that can climb out of the Championship.

So far this summer, QPR have added Calum Ward, Tariq Lamptey, Boy Kemper and Pierce Charles to bolster their competitiveness for the campaign ahead.

If QPR are going to compete for promotion to the Premier League, then holding onto their top talent will be just as important as completing any signings.

But it’s been reported that Burnley are keen on signing Ronnie Edwards this summer following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Clarets will be aiming to fight for promotion next season, and bolstering their backline is an area that is being targeted by new head Nicky Hayen after losing Maxime Esteve.

Not only would it be a blow for Stéphan to lose someone of the centre-back’s quality, but it would be strengthening a Championship rival.

QPR paid £4.5 million to sign Edwards from Southampton last January, and he proved a key part of the side in the second half of the campaign.

The defender initially spent time on loan at Loftus Road in 2024/25, and he is now one of the most valuable members of the squad after signing on a permanent basis.

His partnership with Jake Clarke-Salter showed a lot of promise in the second half of 2025/26, and the two consistently playing together next season could be quite a formidable duo.

What Ronnie Edwards brings to QPR

Edwards has made a big impact at QPR due to his smart, ball-playing talent, having completed 50.84 passes per 90 last season at a rate of 87.9 percent (all stats from FotMob).

He also contributed 2.75 accurate long balls each game, helping QPR get up the pitch from the back.

While the 23-year-old's defensive contributions could naturally still be improved, it’s no surprise that he is attracting interest from a club like Burnley when he's ranking in the top percentile of Championship centre-backs for interceptions, blocked shots and clearances.

It is vital for the Hoops that they hold firm and look to keep Edwards in the team. He is a well-rounded centre-back with his best years ahead of him. Retaining talent like that is how QPR can compete for promotion back to the Premier League.

If QPR sell off their top talent for a quick profit, then their chances of progressing past 15th place in the Championship on a regular basis will become slim.

It should have to take a really significant fee, one that's simply too good to turn down, for the London outfit to even consider a move. Potentially as much as £20 million.

QPR have done exceptionally well to turn things around behind the scenes, becoming a more financially stable club, but the next path forward is building a strong squad and that requires the strength to hold onto players like Edwards.
