Sheffield United will be hoping for a much more successful season in the Championship this time around, after their 2025/26 campaign was full of inconsistency.

It is fair to say that the past year at Bramall Lane has been turbulent, both on and off the pitch, with Chris Wilder now looking to oversee a successful reshuffle of his squad with the first game of 2026/27 approximately two weeks away.

However, off-pitch debacles involving former owner, Prince Abdullah, and current consortium, COH Sports, have certainly dominated headlines whilst there has also been movement in the transfer market in terms of incomings and outgoings.

That said, the one deal thus far which caught the eye was Andre Brooks' £8m move to second tier rivals, Norwich City, and now it has emerged that Gustavo Hamer could return to Coventry City from S2 after the Sky Blues' Premier League return.

The 29-year-old signed for the Blades from City three summers ago for £15m, and his influence has been laid bare for all to see, particularly after picking up the 2024/25 Championship Player of the Season award.

Even though there has been intense speculation over the Dutch-Brazilian's future for some time now, it will still come as a blow to most that United look set to lose his creative spark and experience.

However, FLW have looked at three players whose own circumstances could be boosted by Hamer's likely exit this summer.

As well as holding significant creative influence with a record of 22 goals and 29 assists in 123 appearances for the Steel City outfit, it has been well-documented for many years that Hamer has the ability to feature in a vast array of midfield positions.

Last season, he was a prominent figure on the left flank under Ruben Selles and Wilder, which, as well as his own fitness issues, had somewhat of a knock-on effect when it came to Tahith Chong's involvement in his first season with the Blades.

Having signed from Luton Town on a four-year contract, the winger only made 21 Championship appearances last term, meaning he was unable to fully get back to his best after a difficult final year at Kenilworth Road.

However, the former Manchester United man did impress, albeit briefly, for Curaçao in their first ever FIFA World Cup this summer, and will be hoping to kick on from here with a full pre-season under his belt.

Callum O'Hare

Whilst speculation has been rife over Hamer's future, it was revealed early in the off-season that Wilder had planned to move United's creator-in-chief into a more central position for 2026/27 amid his latest squad reshuffle.

However, such plans may have impacted Callum O'Hare, who was named as the club's Player of the Year for 2025/26, having accumulated eight goals and as many assists whilst featuring in all but one of last season's league fixtures.

O'Hare and Hamer, of course, know each other extremely well at this point, with the 28-year-old playmaker moving to S2 on a free transfer two years ago after the expiration of his own contract with the Sky Blues, but he will most likely be able to continue flourishing in his own advanced midfield role this season if his long-time colleague returns to the West Midlands.

Furthermore, O'Hare recently stated that his aim for the future is to bring success back to Bramall Lane, which will be music to Wilder's ears.

Christian Nwachukwu

A potential wildcard shout is that 20-year-old winger, Christian Nwachukwu may see his chances of future first-team opportunities improve if Hamer was to depart.

The Nigerian was signed as part of a data-driven strategy deployed by COH Sports after their takeover was completed in late 2024, moving from Bulgarian side, Botev Plovdiv.

However, Nwachukwu is yet to make a first-team appearance for the South Yorkshire outfit, having spent the second half of last season on loan with Turkish 1.Lig side, Serik Spor, posting one goal and two assists in 11 games.

Naturally, you would expect United to dip into the transfer market to source a swift replacement for Hamer, but it could still mean that, at the start of the season, the prospect could feature in matches such as the EFL Cup first round against Mansfield Town.
