Newcastle’s new teenage sensation confident he can make immediate impact

Newcastle United summer signing Sean Steur says he is confident of making an immediate impact in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old made his pre-season debut for the Magpies against Gateshead on Saturday after joining from Ajax for a fee of around £23m.

And the youngster says he is relishing the chance to play in the Premier League.

“I wouldn’t come here if I didn’t think I was able to do that [play in the Premier League],” Steur said.

“Players have come from there who are now in the best clubs in the world and I hope to be one of them.

“Of course, I need to learn, but everybody wants to play. There is a lot of competition, but I will just try to do my best and play as many minutes as I can.

“They have a good vision, and they didn’t really have to convince me because if a club like that comes, it is an honour. It’s a really big club in the Premier League with a lot of history, so I am really happy to be here.”

Boss Eddie Howe was very complimentary of Steur’s display in the draw with Gateshead, saying that “he can be really pleased with his performance”.

Steur, meanwhile, described Howe as “really energetic” and said that Newcastle’s head coach has already helped him a lot in training.

Whilst Howe is supportive of the club’s transfer policy this summer of bringing in youth, he acknowledged that losing the experience of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali is not ideal.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães is also the subject of links to Arsenal. He is set to return to training with Newcastle, alongside Steur and the rest of the squad, on Friday as they head to Spain for a warm weather training camp.
